Why Is My AC Blowing Warm Air? 7 Causes & Fixes
Short answer: check your thermostat setting and air filter first — those two fix more "warm air" calls than you'd believe. If those are fine, it's likely a frozen coil, low refrigerant, or an electrical failure, and it's time to call a tech.
Start here: the two-minute checks
Before you call anyone, check these two things first.
1. The thermostat. Is it set to COOL (not HEAT, not just FAN)? Is the set temperature actually below the room temperature? "Fan ON" versus "Fan AUTO" matters too — with the fan set to ON, the blower runs constantly and blows room-temperature air between cooling cycles, which feels warm. Switch it to AUTO. And if someone in the house "adjusted" the thermostat recently, verify what it actually says.
2. The air filter. A clogged filter chokes airflow, which drops the evaporator coil temperature until it freezes into a block of ice — and then you get warm air (or almost no air). If the filter looks gray and matted, replace it, turn the system to FAN-only for a few hours to thaw the coil, then switch back to COOL. If cooling returns, you've solved it.

The 7 most common causes
1. Thermostat problems. Beyond wrong settings: dying batteries, miscalibrated sensors, or a failed thermostat that isn't signaling the outdoor unit at all. If the indoor blower runs but the outdoor condenser never kicks on, the thermostat or its wiring is suspect number one.
2. Dirty or frozen evaporator coil. The indoor coil absorbs heat from your home's air. When airflow is restricted (dirty filter, blocked returns, failing blower), the coil temperature plummets and condensation freezes solid. Ice insulates the coil, cooling collapses, and you get warm air. Thawing without fixing the airflow cause just repeats the cycle.
3. Low refrigerant. Refrigerant doesn't get "used up" — a low charge means a leak. Symptoms: warm air, ice on the copper lines, hissing sounds, and a system that runs forever without cooling the house. 4. Failed capacitor or contactor. The capacitor gives the compressor and fan motors their starting jolt; the contactor is the electrical switch that engages them. When either fails, the outdoor unit hums, clicks, or sits silent while the indoor blower happily circulates uncooled air. This is the most common electrical cause and usually a same-day fix.
5. Dirty condenser coils. The outdoor unit dumps heat outside. When its coils are matted with cottonwood, grass clippings, and pollen — extremely common in North Jersey Junes — it can't reject heat, pressures climb, and cooling capacity tanks. A professional coil cleaning restores it.
6. Ductwork problems. Leaking, disconnected, or crushed ducts can dump your cold air into the attic or crawlspace instead of your rooms. In older Clifton and Paterson homes, we've found supply ducts completely detached — the system was "running fine" while cooling nobody.
